At Foley, we offer clients the full range of our national and international practice specialties.

Our growing clientele in Michigan includes many significant companies in the automotive industry as well as firms devoted to financial serviceshealth care, transportation, retail sales, general manufacturing, venture capital and e-business.

Our Beginnings
We opened our Detroit office in October 2000 in response to continuing client requests that we locate in southeastern Michigan, coupled with the firm's desire to offer Michigan businesses local access to the national resources of one of America's largest law firms.

Our Detroit office currently numbers more than 40 lawyers who serve clients with a mix of local talent and national resources. Our Michigan lawyers include partners and associates from a variety of business law and litigation disciplines, together with intellectual property and patent attorneys.

These professionals are backed by colleagues housed in offices throughout the United States and in Brussels, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Real-time access to all Foley lawyers is assured by state-of-the-art information technology and a 165-year-old firm culture that puts clients first.

Comprehensive Legal Services
Foley's entry into Michigan dramatically changes the legal landscape for multi-national, national, regional and local businesses located here. We believe we offer clients one-stop shopping for legal services on a scale that smaller and regional firms cannot match. With our firm, Michigan clients can access the specialties and experience of our attorneys from coast to coast.

Our lawyers are organized into departments — such as Business Law, Litigation, and Intellectual Property with more than 40 focused practice areas — as well as our full-service industry teams. Of particular interest to many Detroit-based clients is our Automotive Industry Team, a multidisciplinary team of attorneys who devote themselves to understanding and solving the myriad of legal issues facing our automotive clients.

Local Management of National Resources
What does Foley's “national practice” mean to our Michigan clients? It means that they have immediate access to lawyers who cover virtually every conceivable legal practice area, from e-business, to energy and telecommunications, to health care, to intellectual property and patents, to corporate finance, capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions. No other law firm in Michigan offers this breadth and depth of professional experience.

Our seasoned and growing contingent of Michigan-based lawyers is charged with enlisting and managing our national resources to the best advantage of our Michigan clients. From what clients have reported to us, they judge our basic approach to client service — positioning local client service leaders to manage the right mix of national resources — as an especially effective way to deliver value-added legal services efficiently.

Business and Government Leaders as Your Lawyers
Foley has attracted a diverse pool of multi-talented lawyers in Detroit. We include in our ranks a former U.S. Attorney, a former Counsel to a Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a former chairperson of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, a former campaign treasurer for the Mayor of Detroit, and a former state prosecutor. These men and women have led many national and international business and financial transactions, and have counseled several government agencies.

We have partners listed in The Best Lawyers in America®* and partners who have been leaders in the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. We even have a partner who served recently on a panel of lawyers selected to reform bankruptcy law in China.

Our Michigan lawyers cover a wide range of legal disciplines. These disciplines include corporate, commercial, securities, venture capital mergers and acquisitions, commercial litigation, bankruptcy, health care, tax, employment, government procurement, intellectual property and patent law, and others.

Unique Strength in the Midwest
The Detroit office is part of our Midwest practice region, which also includes our Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee offices. Foley has more attorneys in this region than any other law firm in the country.

Our depth of regional experience and our understanding of the area's industrial economy and business climate offers us a unique opportunity to serve clients.

The following synopsis is a review of the Detroit office's major practice areas:

Business Practice
The Michigan attorneys in our Business Law Department have managed a broad range of complex transactions. Their practice includes general corporate and commercial matters (for both public and private companies), venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, asset securitization, securities law, capital markets, e-commerce, real estate, and international transactions.

Foley's lawyers have been issuers' and underwriters' counsel on more than 200 public securities offerings in the past decade, raising more than $10 billion for our clients (including more than 30 IPOs, raising $3 billion).

A full complement of associate attorneys provides cost-effective support in all areas of corporate and transactional law, including mergers and acquisitions, entity formation (corporations, partnerships, LLCs), corporate governance, corporate financesecuritiestax, and real estate matters.

Litigation
Our Detroit lawyers include litigators skilled in contract and commercial matters, the Uniform Commercial Code, bankruptcy and creditors' rights, appellate and class action matters, health law, toxic torts, public law, and securities issues. These lawyers also call upon the resources of litigation attorneys in any of Foley's offices nationwide.

Labor and Employment
Our Labor & Employment Practice ranges from general workplace issues, such as equal opportunity and wage and hour matters, to the specific aspects of labor law involving unionized workforces and collective bargaining.

Intellectual Property
Intellectual property experience is a core strength in our law firm. Recently we were ranked number one among all “general practice” law firms nationwide in the number of trademarks prosecuted on behalf of clients and number two among general practice firms in the number of patents prosecuted. We also were the only general practice law firm listed on two separate “Top 10 Lists” for our patent litigation experience. We offer our clients complex intellectual property planning and strategy development, and value extraction.

Our Intellectual Property Practice is broad enough in scope and deep enough in technical experience to assist clients in every industry. In addition to our work in the automotive industry, we help clients in such technical fields biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronics and mechanical and electromechanical technologies with our patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and litigation experience.

Health Care
Foley has one of the largest, most comprehensive, health care industry practices in the United States. Our work in health care includes corporate compliance, credentialing and peer review, legislation, the special needs of hospitals and health systems, long-term and managed care, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), physician organizations, and provider operations.

Our Service Commitment
Foley has been committed to outstanding client service for 165 years. Our commitment is ever stronger in today's dynamic business environment as we extend our capabilities to an expanding clientele in Michigan. We are pleased to be part of this business community and look forward to a future devoted to meeting all of our clients' needs, wherever they might be.
