John L. Murphy is of counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP, where his practice includes international financings, international capital markets transactions, mergers and acquisitions, workouts and restructurings, and general corporate advisory work. Mr. Murphy is a member of the firm’s Transactional & Securities; Finance & Financial Institutions; Bankruptcy & Business Reorganizations; Latin America; and International Practices, as well as the Energy and Food & Beverage Industry Teams.
Mr. Murphy’s experience includes the representation in Latin America and the Caribbean of: foreign and domestic financial institutions in providing financings to private and public borrowers and issuers; creditors’ committees and debtors in financial restructurings and workouts; investment banks and underwriting syndicates in international securities offerings and private placements; and sellers and buyers in acquisitions, investments, and privatizations.
Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Murphy was counsel at White & Case LLP.
Mr. Murphy is a board certified specialist in International Law, Florida State Bar (2006-2016), and is admitted to the New York State Bar (2012), District of Columbia Bar (1999), and Florida State Bar (1997). Mr. Murphy is also a member of the Council of the Americas, International Bar Association, American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar, The Florida Bar, and Dade County Bar Associations. He speaks fluent Spanish.
Mr. Murphy is the co-author of "A Case for Comity: The Bankruptcy of Mexico’s Vitro tested US International Insolvency Laws and Serves as a Warning to both Creditors and Debtors" that was published in International Financial Law Review (September 2012) and "Durango's impact on Mexico/US cross-border insolvency," that was published in Latin Lawyer (April/May 2005). Mr. Murphy was recognized by the South Florida Daily Business Review as the Top Dealmaker of the Year for 2012 in the restructuring/distressed category.
Mr. Murphy earned his law degree (J.D., 1997), master’s degree (MBA, 1997), and bachelor’s degree (BSFS, cum laude, 1993) from Georgetown University. During law school, he was a member of the International Environmental Law Review.
