HITECH Proposed Rule: What’s New in HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Enforcement

On July 14, 2010, the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (Proposed Rule) that proposes significant changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy, Security, and Enforcement Rules. Many of these proposed changes are required by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), but others are intended to improve the workability and effectiveness of the existing HIPAA rules.

During this Web conference, Foley attorneys R. Michael Scarano, Jacqueline M. Saue, M. Leeann Habte, and Maureen F. Kwiecinski discussed the Proposed Rule and its effects for providers and suppliers.

Topics included:
  • An overview of the regulatory changes included in the Proposed Rule
  • Strategies for making necessary changes to HIPAA compliance programs
  • Mechanisms for reducing risks associated with non-compliance
