Michael P. (Mike) Matthews
Partner

Michael P. Matthews is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP and is vice chair of the firm's Government Enforcement, Compliance & White Collar Defense Practice. Mr. Matthews is a litigator with experience in securities class actions, SEC enforcement matters, and shareholder derivative actions, including several of the largest such matters in U.S. history, as well as other government enforcement and complex litigation matters.

As a member of the firm's Securities Enforcement & Litigation and Government Enforcement, Compliance & White Collar Defense Practices, Mr. Matthews represents individual and corporate clients in a variety of securities litigation matters, as well as SEC, white collar, and other government enforcement matters. He also conducts internal investigations in the U.S. and abroad on behalf of corporations, audit committees, special litigation committees, and boards of directors. Current engagements include representations of the former general counsel of a Fortune 50 company, the former CFO of a Fortune 500 company, various officers and directors of other domestic, foreign, and multinational companies, and a Fortune 500 company in securities and shareholder litigation matters. He also represents companies in False Claims Act litigation and other litigation brought by the government.

As a member of the firm's Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution and IP Litigation Practices, Mr. Matthews also litigates and tries a variety of other complex commercial, intellectual property, and civil disputes. Most recently, Mr. Matthews and his colleagues at Foley won a significant civil rights jury verdict that destruction of an affordable housing complex would have a discriminatory effect on minority and disabled residents of the complex.

Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Matthews worked for Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C., where his practice focused on white-collar criminal defense, commercial litigation, and government contract litigation.

Mr. Matthews is a graduate of Georgetown University (B.A., magna cum laude, 1993) and the University of Michigan (J.D., magna cum laude, 1996), where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. After graduation from law school, Mr. Matthews served as a law clerk for the Honorable J.P. Stadtmueller, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Mr. Matthews currently serves on the board of directors of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and is a member of the Goldburg American Inn of Court in Tampa. Mr. Matthews also has taught as an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School; served on the Local Rules Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin; published articles on constitutional and criminal law; and served as the editor of the "Business Crimes Hotline," published monthly in the Business Crimes Bulletin. He also served on the MBA Judicial Selection Committee, which evaluates candidates for judicial appointments, was vice president of the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association, and received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Milwaukee 7 economic development initiative.

Mr. Matthews is admitted to practice in Florida, the District of Columbia, Wisconsin, and Illinois, and before the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
