John M. Garvey

John M. Garvey is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP. He is a member of the Chemical, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice and the Life Sciences, Nanotechnology and Emerging Technologies Industry Teams. Prior to joining Foley, Dr. Garvey was a member of Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. Dr. Garvey works with life science and pharmaceutical clients, creating value in technology portfolios encompassing such areas as computationally assisted drug design, immunology and vaccine technologies, tissue and organ regeneration, bioweapons detection and neutralization, blood cells and blood products, stem cell and transgenic technologies, cancer therapeutics, drug delivery, gene therapy technologies, nanobiology technologies, drug delivery and biomedical devices. In addition to his life science practice, Dr. Garvey also represents high-tech and nanotechnology companies in business transactions that involve intellectual property and technology transfer. Dr. Garvey's practice focuses on: - Creating technology portfolios for life-science and pharmaceutical clients
- Advising clients regarding licensing programs, technology transfer and collaborative research programs
- Advising clients in private equity and other financial transactions
- Performing due diligence investigations for private and public financings and M&A transactions
- Providing patent invalidity, freedom to operate and non-infringement opinions
- Representing clients in patent interference proceedings
Dr. Garvey earned his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center and holds a master's degree in molecular biology from Fairfield University. He received his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from Brandeis University. His research focused on receptor mediated transport of immunoglobulins by the neonatal Fc receptor, FcRn. Dr. Garvey is a 2005 recipient of the Boston Business Journal's "40 Under 40" award, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to their professions, and to the city of Boston. Dr. Garvey was recognized for his skilled representation of life science companies and other philanthropic efforts. He was selected for inclusion in the 2006 and 2007 Massachusetts Super Lawyers–Rising Stars® Editions for his work in intellectual property. Dr. Garvey is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
