Thomas R. Mikrut is an associate with Foley and a member of the firm's Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution and Consumer Financial Services Litigation Practices. Mr. Mikrut has extensive experience representing clients in a wide range of areas, including fraud, labor and employment, commercial law, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and breach of contract disputes.Mr. Mikrut takes great pride in his pro bono work. He has assisted a lesbian mother in a custody dispute, an HIV-positive married couple in a discrimination case, and a criminal defendant who, through a novel argument, successfully challenged his sentence on appeal – Mr. Mikrut then reduced his client's sentence by 52 months in the district court. Mr. Mikrut is actively involved with the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago as well as the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago. He is a founding member of Foley's Environmental Advisory Initiatives Board (the "Green Team") and co-chaired the firm's 2008 summer associate trial advocacy program. Mr. Mikrut received his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law (summa cum laude, Order of the Coif) in 2006. While in law school, he won Rickert Awards for Excellence in Service as well as Excellence in Academics and earned six CALI awards. Mr. Mikrut received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in English with honors distinction after submitting a thesis on poetic responses to the AIDS crisis. Mr. Mikrut is licensed to practice in Illinois, and has also been admitted to practice in the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
