Samantha R. Powers is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP and is a member of the Consumer Financial Services Litigation; Labor & Employment; and Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practices. Ms. Powers maintains a general commercial litigation practice, through which she has worked on complex commercial disputes, products liability defense and environmental resource matters. Her consumer financial services litigation practice involves representing banks in problem loan workouts, lender liability defense and consumer/bank relationships, including litigating claims under the Truth in Lending Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Fair Credit Billing Act, "fair lending," the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, and other federal and state unfair trade practice and consumer protection laws. As a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Practice, Ms. Powers represents employers in the litigation of employment-related claims and counsels clients to ensure their compliance with all state and federal laws that affect their human resources. Prior to joining Foley, Ms. Powers practiced with a national labor and employment boutique firm, representing employers in investigatory proceedings before state agencies and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and in federal and state court pertaining to claims of discrimination, sexual harassment, breach of contract, defamation and misrepresentation. She was also an adjunct instructor of hospitality management law for the Orlando Culinary Academy. Ms. Powers earned her J.D. (cum laude, 2005) and a Master of Arts in mass communication (with distinction, 2005) from the University of Florida. While in law school, she was a teaching assistant for appellate advocacy, and legal research and writing, and earned honors in both topics as well as in mediation clinic. Ms. Powers was vice president of the Law College Council and an executive member-at-large as well. She received her undergraduate degree in public relations, with highest honors, from the University of Florida in 2000. Ms. Powers is a county mediator certified by the Supreme Court of Florida, Dispute Resolution Center. She is admitted to practice in Florida. Ms. Powers is a member of the Orange County Bar Association and its Young Lawyer's Section, for which she has served for three successive years as co-chair of its fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.
