Mr. John Yslas is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP in the Labor & Employment and Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practices. He is also a member of the National Class Action Group and the Litigation Department Training Committee.Mr. Yslas has represented employers in a wide variety of actions, including those involving state and federal claims of discrimination, retaliation, harassment, breach of employment contract, wrongful termination, unequal pay, breach of fiduciary duty, unlawful interference with prospective business opportunity, misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair competition, constitutional rights violations, and wage and hour violations. He has also defended employers in class action lawsuits and before various administrative bodies, and extensively advised clients regarding compliance with state and federal employment laws. Mr. Yslas' litigation practice encompasses all aspects of litigation, including trial and arbitration, and all phases of trial preparation, arguing law and motion matters, taking depositions, and preparing and responding to pleadings. He served as trial attorney in a five-week trial, successfully defending a multi-million dollar claim. Mr. Yslas also served as trial attorney on a three-week long, 14-plaintiff jury trial, obtaining a complete defense verdict on all claims brought by all 14 plaintiffs. He also successfully challenged a wage and hour rule promulgated by the California Department of Labor Standards and Enforcement (DLSE) in a declaratory relief action against the DLSE; the trial court granted Mr. Yslas' summary judgment motion, and the Court of Appeals affirmed the decision in a published decision. Mr. Yslas also successfully defended a major city in a three-week long civil rights trial. Mr. Yslas previously served as a commissioner on the five-member Los Angeles Civil Service Commission, which oversees the personnel decisions for the great majority of employees of the City of Los Angeles. His duties included presiding over appeals of disciplinary actions, background disqualifications, and a variety of other matters. Mr. Yslas is also active in several organizations. He is an active member of the Mexican-American Bar Association. He served on the 2008 Hispanic National Bar Association Convention Planning Committee. He also served on the Los Angeles County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service Committee. Mr. Yslas currently serves as trustee for the Mexican American Bar Foundation and co-chair of the California Minority Counsel Program Newsletter Committee. Mr. Yslas received a B.A. degree with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1991), and a J.D. degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (1996). He is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in California.
