Tianran Yan is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP. He is a member of the firm’s Chemical, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice and Nanotechnology and Life Sciences Industry Teams.
Mr. Yan’s practice focuses on assisting clients worldwide with their intellectual property needs, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. and internationally, and evaluating patents for freedom-to-operate, non-infringement, and invalidity opinions. He has counseled clients on a wide range of technologies, including polymers, nanomaterials, nanolithography, printed electronics, OLED, OPV, fuel cells, batteries, biomedical devices, diagnostic assays, small-molecule drugs, therapeutic antibodies, stem-cell therapies, nutritional formulations, and transgenic and cisgenic plants.
Mr. Yan earned his law degree from the Chicago-Kent College of Law (J.D., 2009), where he was an editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review and a recipient of the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law. While in law school, Mr. Yan served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez in the Northern District of Illinois.
Mr. Yan earned his master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular genetics (M.S., 2006) at University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine, and his bachelor’s degree in biotechnology (B.S., 2004) from Sun Yat-Sen University.
Mr. Yan is admitted to practice in Illinois and the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Mr. Yan is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
