Bill Katt is senior counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP and a member of the firm's Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Appellate, and Environmental Regulation Practices and the International Litigation and Arbitration Group.
Mr. Katt specializes in the resolution of high-stakes U.S. and international disputes that have arisen out of complex commercial transactions, including disputes regarding compliance with federal regulations, intellectual property licenses, stock and asset purchase agreements, mining leases, health care provider agreements, employment agreements, and insurance policies. Mr. Katt has significant experience defending clients from allegations of securities law violations and in shareholder derivative litigation, and in litigating matters implicating federal and state environmental laws. Mr. Katt also assists clients in conducting internal investigations in the face of reported or suspected violations of state or federal laws.
Mr. Katt has considerable experience litigating in federal and state appellate courts around the United States. He is a member of the bars of and has practiced in the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Circuits. He is a co-author of the Wisconsin chapter of The Appellate Practice Compendium (Dana Livingston ed. 2012).
Mr. Katt is licensed to practice in Illinois, New York, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin, and regularly handles cases pending in other jurisdictions with the assistance of local counsel.
Mr. Katt serves on the board of Chicago’s Public Interest Law Initiative ("PILI"), and is a member of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association, various American Bar Association committees, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution Young & International organization and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
Prior to joining Foley, he clerked for the Honorable Terence T. Evans on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He is a graduate of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and of Columbia Law School, where he served as the executive articles editor of the Columbia Law Review.
