Gregory Husisian on De Minimis Demise – 'There actually is bipartisan support'
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Gregory Husisian shared perspective on the United States’ end of the tariff exemption for small packages in the Bloomberg article, “U.S. Ends Tariff Exemption for Small Packages, Upending Global E-Commerce.”
“There actually is bipartisan support,” Husisian, co-chair of Foley’s International Trade & National Security team, said of the decision to end the exemption, known as the de minimis rule. The exemption permitted the importation of certain shipments valued below $800 without the filing of otherwise required paperwork and standard inspections at U.S. ports of entry.
“This was intended for grandma sending over an $80 package of toys, not like a huge Chinese company sending tens of thousands of packages every single day of $12 T-shirts,” he added.
Husisian’s commentary also appeared in The Toronto Star and Transport Topics.
