Foley & Lardner LLP is on the forefront of intellectual property law, and actively committed to promoting scholarly research and writing. We are proud to sponsor the Eighth Annual Intellectual Property Writing Competition with prizes totaling $15,000 for papers addressing intellectual property topics, such as patents, copyrights, domain names, trademarks, computer law, and trade secret law.
Acceptable topics are as broad as a candidate's initiative, creativity, and vision. Representative examples include, but are not limited to:
Eligibility Requirements: Individuals who are currently enrolled in their first or second year of either a three-year full-time or four-year part-time Juris Doctorate program at an AALS accredited law school are eligible. Individuals who have accepted either summer or post-graduate employment with Foley & Lardner LLP but are not yet employees of the firm are eligible. Employees or immediate relatives of employees of Foley & Lardner LLP are not eligible.
Judging: Winners will be determined at the sole discretion of Foley & Lardner LLP. All entrants will be notified of the competition results in writing. Criteria for judging include: (a) originality of thought; (b) contributions to the law and practice; (c) completeness of scholarly research; and (d) the overall style and content of the work.
Publishing Rights: The author will retain ownership of the copyright for all works submitted. However, authors receiving any award must first grant Foley & Lardner LLP a worldwide, royalty free, non-exclusive license to publish the work or have the work published. All authors shall retain the right to publish or have published submitted articles. However, authors receiving any award must include a footnote on the first page noting the Foley & Lardner LLP award.
