John Hurley is chief operating officer of Foley & Lardner LLP, where he is responsible for developing and implementing the firm’s strategic growth plan, including establishing lawyer teams to develop new business opportunities with existing and potential clients, implementing client retention and growth strategies, and identifying and facilitating cross-selling opportunities between practices and industry teams.
Mr. Hurley brings more than 25 years of business development, marketing and operations experience in the legal, management consulting and e-commerce industries. Prior to joining Foley, he was chief business development officer at global corporate law firm DLA Piper, where he developed and drove strategies focused on client retention and growth. At DLA Piper, he previously served as head of the firm’s early-stage venture capital program, advising more than 1,000 emerging growth technology companies on market development, strategic partnerships and financing issues.
Mr. Hurley was founder and president of LMR Company, a management consulting firm that provided a broad range of high-impact business development and marketing solutions for technology, service sector and venture capital clients.
Mr. Hurley is an adjunct professor at American University where he teaches courses on entrepreneurship. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and universities on topics related to business development, entrepreneurship and raising venture capital.
The National Law Journal recognized Mr. Hurley as one of the Legal Business Trailblazers and Pioneers, honoring those who have truly “moved the needle” in facilitating the changing ways that law firms conduct business (2013). He has been featured in the Washington Post, Washington Business Journal, Regardie's Power, Potomac Tech Journal, Business Journal, Baltimore Business Journal, The Daily Deal and Mass High Tech, and the Journal of New England Technology.
Mr. Hurley earned his Bachelor of Science in business management from the University of Maryland University College at College Park.
