Overview

Travis W. Simmons is a registered patent attorney with Foley & Lardner LLP and is a member of the firm’s Mechanical & Electromechanical Technologies Practice. Mr. Simmons counsels clients on intellectual property matters, including patent prosecution and enforcement, licensing, due diligence investigations, and product clearance.

Mr. Simmons has extensive experience in the automotive industry, both as an engineer and as a patent lawyer. Since joining Foley, he has prepared and prosecuted patent applications, performed product clearances, and supported patent litigation on automotive technologies, including safety systems (e.g., airbag modules, seat belt systems, sensing/camera systems), interiors (e.g., seating, instrument panels, switches, lighting, trim panels, consoles), powertrain systems (e.g., power take-off units, half-shafts, differentials, gear assemblies, CV-joints), engine systems (e.g., camshafts), and battery systems for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. Prior to joining Foley, he worked for over eight years for Johnson Controls Inc. as a design engineer, developing mechanism systems for use within JCI’s automotive seating business and was awarded two U.S. patents for seat mechanisms.

Mr. Simmons also has extensive experience preparing and prosecuting both utility and design patent applications for kitchen and bath fixtures (e.g., sinks, faucets, toilets, valves, baths, etc.).

Affiliations

Mr. Simmons has been an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law, where he helped the law school obtain clinical certification from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a patent law clinic aimed at educating students in the area of U.S. patent prosecution while providing pro bono patent services to the public. He has also taught the patent law clinic at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law.

Education

Mr. Simmons graduated magna cum laude from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law where he was inducted into the Justice Frank Murphy Honor Society. He graduated from the University of Michigan–Dearborn (M.S.E., mechanical engineering) and from GMI Engineering and Management Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan (B.S., mechanical engineering).
