Uetz Discusses Foley Team’s Pro Bono Work on Behalf of Detroit-Based Nonprofit Serving Cancer Patients

Partner Ann Marie Uetz was quoted in a Michigan Lawyers Weekly article, “Nonprofit off to a running start thanks to Midwest legal team,” about the firm’s pro bono corporate and trademark work on behalf of Cap & Conquer Inc., a Detroit-based startup that provides cancer patients with a type of scalp-cooling technology that helps reduce hair loss during chemotherapy.

Cap & Cancer was founded by Madison Novice, a first-year medical student at the University of Michigan who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma prior to the start of her senior year at Duke University. Madison had used such a product, called a Cold Cap, during her chemotherapy treatment.

Madison, a friend of Uetz’s family, reached out to Uetz with a question about filing articles of incorporation for her fledgling nonprofit. Uetz, whose pro bono practice is focused on promoting social justice and wellness, offered her the firm’s full support.

“We guided Madison and her team through the process of forming the nonprofit, naming and logo issues, and advised them on the requirements for seeking donations in various jurisdictions around the United States,” Uetz said. “Our corporate team drafted the formation documents and other required state filings to allow the company to operate as a nonprofit, and assisted in completing and filing its Form 1023-EZ application to be recognized as an IRS designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.”
