Partner Scott Ellis was named a Best Mentor by Texas Lawyer in its annual Texas Legal Awards.
Ellis, a partner in Foley’s Houston office, is vice chair of the firm’s Energy Litigation Practice and the office’s hiring partner.
His passion for mentorship earned Ellis the Foley Carl Hitchner Mentor of the Year Award in 2019. The award is presented annually to recognize outstanding mentoring to Foley’s young attorneys. As hiring partner, he is committed to making a meaningful impact in the careers of Foley’s associates, starting at the summer program level. A Certified Mentor with Foley, he formally mentors associates in the Energy Litigation Practice Group, taking time to train and teach these associates and offer them a quality experience.
Ellis also extends his outreach to young, aspiring lawyers as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center, teaching Trial Advocacy to second- and third-year students. At UHLC, Ellis also is a mentor and active participant in the award-winning UHLC Pre-Law Pipeline Program to help increase the diversity of law school applicants by providing law school preparatory resources for undergraduate students who are first generation, low income, or members of groups underrepresented in the legal profession.
Ellis also has served as one of three Trustees of the Henry David Thoreau Foundation, which awards scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who are interested in interdisciplinary environmental studies in college and beyond. He mentors several of the students during each of their college years and continues to provide mentorship as they begin their professional careers.
As Co-Chair of the Houston Bar Association’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Ellis designs and implements programs to assist diverse law students and young attorneys succeed in their new careers.
