Christopher Swift Comments on European Enforcement of Russia Sanctions

Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Christopher Swift is quoted in The New York Times article, “At Europe’s Largest Port, Russia Sanctions Meet Their Toughest Test,” about the extensive practical difficulties facing Europe’s customs investigators tasked with enforcing the European Union’s sanctions imposed on Russia – the toughest sanctions the European Union has imposed on any country.

Swift said that, “The European Union doesn’t invest as much in enforcement measures” as the United States and that, “It’s handled by national government agencies — some are more interested in helping Ukraine than others.”

He added, “Enforcement resources are stretched thin and sometimes not properly targeted.”
