Andrew Wronski on Tariff Fluidity – 'Keep on top of the issues'
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Andrew Wronski assessed the evolving shift in U.S. trade policy in the Milwaukee Business Journal article, “Trump tariffs won’t disappear — so how should Wisconsin businesses prepare?“
Wronski, chair of Foley’s national Manufacturing Sector, described tariffs as an essential component of President Trump’s trade policy and a key strategy for the administration’s efforts to boost American manufacturing.
“I don’t think anybody is or should be surprised by the fluidity of the situation,” Wronski noted, explaining that tariffs are a way of gaining leverage in both one-time situations and for broader negotiations, particularly with Mexico and Canada as part of revisiting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
“Our main advice is you just have to keep on top of the issues and, generally speaking, you should be planning for an environment in which there will be an increased use of tariffs across the board,” Wronski said. “And if the tariffs end up not being across the board, then (there will be) exemptions for certain countries or certain product lines.
“That’s easier to adjust to than an assumption there will be no tariffs,” he added.
