Foley & Lardner LLP partner Jason Mehta is profiled by Law360 for his recognition as a 2025 Health Care MVP.
Law360 details Mehta’s major accomplishments from the last year, the challenges he faced and how he overcame them, the origins of his health care legal journey, his motivations, and advice he has for rising attorneys.
Mehta pointed to his team’s success in a landmark False Claims Act case in Florida as his biggest accomplishment last year, describing how Foley secured a first-of-its-kind ruling that found the FCA’s qui tam provisions to be unconstitutional.
“In the middle of what was otherwise very standard discovery between the parties, we did the proverbial Hail Mary, and it worked,” he said.
Mehta shared that he navigates the challenges inherent in litigation, particularly high stakes matters affecting everyday people, through centering the client’s experience.
“I realize every day that clients are trusting myself and our team at Foley with a lot. They’re trusting their futures with us,” Mehta continued. “And that trust really means a lot to me, and I never try to forget it.”
He reflected on another example of how he lives up to that trust, one he said is among the moments he is most proud of last year — securing a favorable settlement for a children’s hospital with the state’s Medicaid program. “Saving as much money as possible for the provision of care to children is just so incredibly meaningful for me,” Mehta said. “And it has a particular resonance as my mom was a pediatric oncologist for 25 years.”
Asked to explain why he entered health care law, Mehta said he values his work supporting a profession, held by both his parents, that is dedicated to caring for others. He noted health care’s critical role in the economy and people’s lives, especially in his home state of Florida.
Describing what drives him, Mehta tied his motivations back to the value he places on client service. “To know that at least at some level, they’re depending on me for some part of what they need, that’s really special to me, but it’s also a real source of motivation,” Mehta explained. “It really causes me to want to do the best possible job I can.”
Mehta encouraged rising attorneys to pursue the kind of law they find rewarding and interesting.
“If you find a niche that you really enjoy and are really passionate about, you’re going to succeed,” he added.
