Foley Recognizes Memorial Hospital and The Medical Oncology Group with Cancer Center Innovator Award
Foley announced that Memorial Hospital and The Medical Oncology Group, PA have been selected as recipients of the 2010 Cancer Center Innovator Award, which honors organizations that have best distinguished themselves as innovators in the business of cancer care. The award was presented at the fourth annual Cancer Center Business Summit.
Memorial Hospital, a 445 bed acute care regional hospital, and The Medical Oncology Group, a 5-physician medical oncologist practice, have taken a unique, collective idea – to convert the medical practice to a collaborative hospital-based “oncology program” consistent with the community’s needs in Gulfport, Miss. – and turned it into reality in less than a year. This new, comprehensive regional cancer program now provides inpatient and outpatient hospital services, radiation therapy services and professional medical services.
“Foley is proud to present the Cancer Center Innovator Award to Memorial Hospital and The Medical Oncology Group for their approach to innovating this new collaborative business model amidst the pressures of health care reform and declining reimbursement,” said Michael L. Blau, chair of the firm’s Health Care Venture Practice and founder of the Cancer Center Business Summit. “These organizations are strongly dedicated to raising the bar in patient-centered cancer care, as they continue to develop quality and patient satisfaction performance metrics, measures and aligned compensation within the program.”
“It took a year to negotiate, a lot of perseverance and a willingness to compromise to create a win-win situation for the practice, the hospital and the community,” said Martin Shenk, chief operating officer of The Medical Oncology Group. “This new oncology program relationship provides a safety net for our providers without giving up autonomy. It will allow them to serve all comers in our community, in a modern, self-contained cancer center.”
The national Advisory Board of the Cancer Center Business Summit selected Memorial Hospital and The Medical Oncology Group as the recipients of this year’s Foley & Lardner LLP Cancer Center Innovator Award based on survey responses submitted by academic medical centers, non-profit and for-profit community hospitals, medical group practices and other cancer care institutions across the nation.
“We are honored to receive the Foley 2010 Cancer Center Innovator Award for excellence in oncology innovation,” said Kent Nicaud, vice president of Physician Administrative Services at Memorial Hospital. “We are excited about our affiliation with the Medical Oncology Group and what this means for our community. The experience of these physicians, combined with the array of cancer services at Memorial, offers quality, state-of-the-art care in one location.”
The Cancer Center Business Summit is the premiere forum for best business models and practices in community-based oncology. The fourth annual Summit, held in Chicago, Ill., explored the impact of health care reform on oncology, including effective strategies for thriving amidst the changing economics of cancer care. It offered attendees the opportunity to learn from industry leaders and peers about the most important issues facing cancer care providers today. Included on the Summit faculty and national Advisory Board are experienced cancer care executives, physician leaders, practice managers, suppliers, vendors and leaders from the financial, business, payor and legal communities.
