Cristina Solomon Comments on the Growing Trend in Employee Background Checks
The Austin American-Statesman covered recent trends in the use of employee background checks. Many employers are starting to conduct background checks – which examine criminal activity, driving records and credit reports – on workers that have been employed with their company for many years in order to protect themselves against potential liability issues. A recent survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that nearly 70 percent of employers conducted background checks, and experts in the field believe that the trend could be growing.
Gardere Labor and Employment Partner Cristina Portela Solomon told the publication that "the trend is that most employers are going to do it for all positions. What you are trying to balance is the safety of the workplace versus making sure you don't violate (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) guidelines when you do a background check."
