Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Donald Schroeder is quoted in a Law360 Employment Authority article, “Progressive Retailer REI’s Union Fight Draws Familiar Jeers,” about a new effort to unionize outdoor retailer REI’s flagship New York City store that is pitting the co-op’s pro-worker corporate values against its business interests.
Schroeder said that “he doesn’t see a company opposing a union workforce as necessarily antithetical to a progressive culture” and added that “a progressive employer may want to set its own culture without having to deal with a union” and “having a union and a collective bargaining agreement that spells out the rules can make policies more rigid, hampering flexibility.”
