Partner Richard Ferris was quoted in a People’s Daily (China) article on July 16, 2014, about the sixth session of the annual U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, which took place in Beijing in July. Ferris, who is co-chair of the U.S. Council for International Business China Committee, was quoted saying Chinese President Xi Jinping’s primary objectives of ‘maintaining mutual respect, thinking big, and focusing on building a new model for the major-country relationship in order to achieve common ground and resolve differences in the China-US relationship’ are laudable and consistent with U.S. business community goals.
Ferris noted there are always complexities in major-country relations, which were made more complex in recent times because of security concerns. However, he commented that recent U.S.-China initiatives, such as negotiations to boost bilateral investment, streamlining travel procedures between the countries, intensified cooperation to address environmental challenges and similar activities, serve as opportunities to realize President Xi’s objectives.
