Washington, D.C. Partner Matthew A. Smith was quoted in an Daniel Fisher column that appeared in Forbes on June 4, 2013 titled, “Obama Takes Aim At Patent Trolls, But Will He Hit Any?.” Fisher’s column discussed the recent stance the White House was taking on the issue of patent trolls — litigious intellectual property owners who only make money by threatening to sue manufacturers for royalties. Mr. Smith indicated that the issue is a complex one and offered analysis on President Obama’s proposed five executive actions and five legislative reforms regarding the issue. Mr. Smith was not optimistic about the president’s chances of getting legislation passed through Congress, given that broad patent reform was passed in 2011 with the America Invents Act.
