The Houston Chronicle covered the 19th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition, which took place at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ in downtown Houston. Chase Roberts, a fifth-grade student from Cornelius Elementary School, took home first place in this year's competition.
"Now y'all know I'm a Baptist preacher from the South," Chase said, giving his best Dr. King impersonation during his speech. "There's no way you can give a Baptist preacher from the South three minutes, a microphone and an audience and expect him not to preach."
Isabel Serna, a fourth grader from Crespo Elementary School, won third place, and Shakeira Hayes, a fifth grader at Pleasantville Elementary School, took second place.
