Partner Ron Eppen is quoted in a Law360 article, “A Guide to Marijuana Legalization in Massachusetts,” about the implementation of a new law legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.
If Massachusetts follows in the path of Colorado and other states that have already legalized marijuana, Eppen said, the small not-profit dispensaries now operated by people who are in it for the culture will likely be replaced by big for-profit corporations that are in it for the money.
“What you’ve seen as the type of dollars that are involved have gotten larger and larger, is a professionalization of cannabis companies, in terms of their management,” he said. “Along with this has come basically a rush of investors who are looking to get in on the action, because the types of returns you can get from investment in a cannabis company are significantly more beneficial to investors than a typical early stage venture capital.”
