Foley Partner Mark Waxman spoke on a BNA audioconference titled “Medical Tourism: From Idea to Implementation” on February 27, 2009.
Mr. Waxman spoke with Dr. T. Forcht Dagi, Partner with HLM Venture Partners, Fredric J. Entin, Partner with Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC, and John Helfrick, Senior Consultant with Harvard Partner Medical International.
This program explored the challenges and opportunities involved in creating a program for health care outside the United States. Known as “medical tourism”, this potential is the subject of both increasing attention, and increasing scrutiny. The program presented information regarding the “medical view” of medical tourism, and the issues which arise both from the perspective of the employer or health plan that desires to offer such a benefit, to the provider which seeks to provide the desired services.
Program Highlights:
- What is medical tourism, where is it occurring and to what extent?
- What types of quality reviews exist to determine that medical tourism is safe and efficacious?
- The considerations that an employer or plan must work through to offer an offshore medical benefit.
- How to evaluate the challenges facing providers in other countries as they seek to provide a service to the US market?
- How to approach a resolution of the legal issues such as liability, contracting, and coverage in creating a benefit that encompasses services outside the United States?
