SBIC is a growth capital program that has more than $20 billion in assets under management, more than half of which is private capital. The capital is spread across approximately 290 private-public partnerships comprising private equity, venture capital, and structured lending funds. With authorization to invest $4 billion annually, the program operates at a zero-subsidy cost to the American taxpayer and throughout its history, SBICs have capitalized American small businesses with about $67 billion. Additionally, SBIC recently launched two initiatives: 1) the $1 billion Impact Investing Initiative focused on infusing capital into for-profit social entrepreneurs, underserved industries, and small businesses located in distressed areas; and 2) the $1 billion Early Stage Initiative focused on capitalizing underserved entrepreneurs.
