Gardere Chair Discusses Texas Firms Being Courted by Larger Firms with Law360
Law360 spoke with Gardere Chair Holland N. O'Neil about Texas law firms facing pressure to merge with national and international firms.
"The reason Texas law firms are being courted like we are is because of our clients," said Ms. O'Neil. "And our clients are because of our lawyers."
Ms. O'Neil added that one of the biggest issues facing the Firm as it considers merger offers from suitors is how to work around client conflicts. With an eye on expansion primarily within Texas, she said Gardere is having talks with similarly-sized Texas firms and smaller firms about partnerships that would add to its existing offices and bring the Firm into new areas, potentially including New York or D.C.
"We've been a Texas law firm for 100 years and we're implementing strategies to stay here for another 100 years," Ms. O'Neil said. "We recognize if you're resting on your laurels, you're going to lose ground."
