Good Morning America covered the Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition on its Martin Luther King Jr. Day segment. Now in its 24th year in Dallas and 20th in Houston, this year's event featured fourth- and fifth-grade students presenting three to five minute speeches answering the question: “What would Dr. King say in his campaign speech if he were running for president this year?”
“Just because our religious beliefs aren't the same, does not mean we can't embrace these differences,” said Malak Albarguthi, a student at Sutton Elementary in Houston.
Lyriq Turner, a fifth-grade student from Charles Rice Learning Center, won the competition in Dallas, and Richard Espinosa-Garza, a fifth-grader from Cornelius Elementary, was the winner in Houston.
