Gardere’s 24th Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition Winner Featured in Dallas Morning News
The Dallas Morning News featured Gardere’s 24th Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Final Competition held at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. Lyriq Turner, a fifth-grade student from Charles Rice Learning Center, took first place in the Dallas Competition.
Eight fourth- and fifth-grade students competed at the Dallas finals event and presented original speeches answering the question: "What would Dr. King say in his campaign speech if he were running for president this year?”
“Dr. King would remind us to deal kindly with strangers, for we too were once strangers in this land,” said Ms. Turner when discussing immigration. “You see, it doesn’t help to build walls. We need to build opportunity on both sides of the border.”
