Lacktman, Ferrante Comment on Proposed Expansion of Coverage For Remote Patient Monitoring

Partners Nate Lacktman and T.J. Ferrante were quoted in an mHealth Intelligence article, “CMS Expands Remote Patient Monitoring Coverage in Proposed 2022 PFS,” about the inclusion of a new category of CPT codes for remote patient monitoring in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ proposed 2022 Physician Fee Schedule.

While the proposed new codes give health care providers more opportunities for reimbursement in remote patient monitoring programs, Lacktman and Ferrante say they are far from complete. “The CMS proposed rule advances the ability of clinicians to use remote monitoring technologies to improve the patient care experience, but the technical details still need to be ironed out,” Lacktman, chair of the firm’s Telemedicine & Digital Health Industry Team, and Ferrante wrote in a blog post last week.

Lacktman and Ferrante also say the recent RTM proposal recognizes the benefit of remote monitoring and continues to foster the use of digital health tools to give clinicians a more comprehensive data set of their patients’ health conditions. “Compared to RPM, the RTM codes offer the promise of broader use cases and applications in patient care,” they wrote.
