Alexandra Shalom Offers Insight on No Surprises Act, Telehealth Billing
Foley & Lardner LLP associate Alexandra Shalom is quoted in the KFF Health News article, “When a Quick Telehealth Visit Yields Multiple Surprises Beyond a Big Bill,” part of the publication’s ‘Bill of the Month’ series, offering insight on the No Surprises Act and medical billing for telehealth services.
Shalom, commenting on a surprise medical bill received by a patient for telehealth services, explained that the No Surprises act is designed to limit surprise medical bills by requiring notice to be given and consent to be obtained in advance.
Shalom noted however that the legislation provides an exception in that it applies only to hospitals, hospital outpatient facilities, critical access hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers. As the patient’s bill was recorded in unrelated categories, Shalom said that it is hard to “tell the exact entity that provides the services,” meaning that it is unclear whether the billing entity was in network.
Shalom’s comments also appeared in NPR.
