Report on Medicare Compliance
Partner Judy Waltz was quoted in a Report on Medicare Compliance article, “Extrapolation Takes a Hit in OIG Report; ‘Inconsistency is Disturbing,’” about a new audit report from the HHS Office of Inspector General showing that Medicare administrative contractors and qualified independent contractors weren’t always consistent in the way they evaluate the extrapolation of overpayments during appeals of claim denials.
Waltz said the findings suggest that a lot of extrapolation may be improperly or at least inconsistently calculated. “For a national program, consistency is obviously important, so the fact that there is such identified inconsistency is disturbing, particularly given the financial impact for providers and suppliers,” she said.
