Joseph (“J.J.”) Silverstein’s practice is focused on corporate and regulatory insurance and reinsurance law. J.J. represents insurers, reinsurers, and managing general agents in transactions, restructurings, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, as well as issues related to licensure, underwriting, claims, and form filings. J.J. specializes in emerging compliance issues for the InsurTech industry (including the use of AI and Machine Learning in underwriting and claims) and in the Federal regulation of the insurance industry. J.J. is a member of the firm’s Insurance Practice Group.

As a law student, J.J. was a summer associate for Foley in its Milwaukee Office. J.J. also served as a judicial intern to The Honorable Emmet G. Sullivan for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Prior to becoming a law student, J.J. worked with Citizens UK in London, where he helped develop a charitable legal service to refer migrant workers to trustworthy legal advisors. J.J. was a Fulbright English Teaching Fellow with the U.S. Department of State in South Korea, where he founded a small grant-making collective for fellow teachers, co-authored “The Fulbright Korea Cookbook,” and volunteered as an English teacher for North Korean defectors.

Within Foley’s Washington D.C. office, J.J. leads the Thurgood Marshall Academy teaching program, where ninth-grade students from a local high school attend law-themed lessons taught by lawyer-volunteers.
