In the July 2007 issue of The American Lawyer, the magazine recognized top firms for their pro bono work in 2006 in The Am Law 200 report. Foley & Lardner LLP was recognized for its asylum work in representing Katrin Michael, an Iraqi human rights activist. Simon Dance, a partner in Foley’s Washington, D.C. office and chair of the firm’s asylum pro bono committee, was quoted in the article titled, “From Death Row to Dolphins.” Dance described the case and said that Michael, who had been living as a temporary resident alien in the United States since 1997, needed permanent resident alien status so that she could testify against Saddam Hussein in Iraq and then return to the United States.
