Sneak Preview: Our Favorite Blockbuster Movie Stars—The Supercars and Supertrucks
Although we typically tackle heavier subject matter at Dashboard Insights, we also like to acknowledge when our favorite cars make cameos in the (pop culture) news. Which brings us to one of our favorite blog topics—which Hollywood blockbuster worthy Supercars will dazzle in theaters this summer.
For those Fast and the Furious franchise fans, the franchise spin off, Hobbs and Shaw, is set to premier in August. However, the trailers released so far give us a previous of some of our soon-to-be favorite cars.
In the more action-heavy first trailer, we see a McLaren 720S driven under a semi-truck, a shout out to the original Fast and the Furious where a souped up 1993 Honda Civic EJ1 drives down the highway underneath a trailer. With its distinctive headlights, 710 horsepower 4.0 Liter V-8 engine, design inspired by the Great White Shark, and a movie star price tag of over $280,000, the McLaren 720S is the perfect match for Hollywood action scenes. The second trailer highlighted more cars, revealing an entire garage (dungeon?) full of McLarens.
Another noticeable appearance in the trailers is a seemingly Frankenstein version of a Peterbilt cab. The truck vaults over a hill and, with the help of a chain of tow trucks/semi cabs, takes down a helicopter in the second trailer. This capability is oddly not listed on the Peterbilt website.
A Jeep Gladiator also makes a brief cameo in the second trailer. The trailer confirms the buzz from earlier this year, when a sharp-eyed fan spotted it in Hawaii during filming. The Gladiator starts at a more accessible $33,000, and boasts a V6 engine with over 7,000 pounds of towing capacity (perfect for carting around safes or any other movie worthy cargo).
Hobbs and Shaw is not the only blockbuster with a need for speed. The John Wick franchise has similarly made Wick’s 1969 Ford Mustang a central character. The jet black car featured a 7 liter V8 engine, the perfect partner to Wick’s highly sought after assassin skills. This year, Wick switched to a more agile sidekick in John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum, with a thrilling Yamaha MT-09 motorcycle chase scene.
As the summer movie season is just beginning, we can’t wait to see what cars will take center stage this summer.
