Partner Melinda Levitt was quoted in a May 29, 2013 Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article titled, “Sordid Email-Intrusion Case Nets $325K Verdict.” The piece discusses Cheng v. Romo, an email intrusion case involving alleged violations of the federal Stored Communications Act and the Massachusetts Privacy Act. Ms. Levitt said a 2012 South Carolina Supreme Court case “shows a private citizen can ‘hack’ into another person’s email account, access very personal emails, and not run afoul of federal law.” Regarding the outcome in Cheng v. Romo, Ms. Levitt continued, “I think it just adds more confusion. It’s another lesson learned in an area of the law from which there is ever-growing confusion, which doesn’t give lawyers much guidance.”
