The Dallas Morning News Features Gardere Attorneys Volunteering at North Texas Juvenile Asylum Clinic

The Dallas Morning News featured Larry Schoenbrun and Rachel Kingrey, two Gardere attorneys who are volunteering at Catholic Charities' legal clinic, assisting juvenile immigrants with their their asylum applications. 

Once a month, lawyers, translators, schoolteachers and other volunteers gather at a free legal clinic at Catholic Charities in northeast Dallas. They listen to horrific stories from children who crossed the Texas border in unprecedented numbers last year seeking refuge from gang violence in Central American countries. 

Immigrants seeking asylum are not granted court-appointed attorneys. Mr. Schoenbrun recently brought together a team from Gardere and successfully assisted a 14-year-old Salvadoran girl with her asylum application, one of the clinic's first successes. 

"The system is abusive," said Mr. Schoenbrun, the son of Eastern European refugees who fled the Holocaust. "… These people have done nothing but flee from being killed." 

Mr. Schoenbrun has recruited 42 Gardere attorneys and 12 staff members across all offices to work on the Firm's Pro Bono Immigrant Children Project. The Firm is currently handling six immigration cases.
