Swift Discusses Guilty Plea by Ex-Trump Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor
Partner Christopher Swift was quoted in a Washington Times article, “George Papadopoulos, former policy adviser for Trump campaign, pleads guilty to lying to the FBI,” about the implications of the former Trump policy adviser’s guilty plea on the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The plea should alarm the White House, Swift said. “It shows that he has turned. If he had a good argument, he wouldn’t plead guilty,” he said. “It’s a tough spot to be in.”
Swift also noted that the charge against Papadopoulos, while relatively light, could still carry jail time, which is enough incentive for Papadopoulos to give Special Counsel Robert Mueller “whatever information he has” to try to mitigate his sentence.
“It gives Special Counsel Mueller leverage to get people higher in the food chain,” he said.
