Partner Ed Baxa is quoted in a Jacksonville Business Journal article, “Q&A: Top Firms on the First Coast Talk Pro Bono Work, Memorable Cases,” about Foley’s pro bono efforts and some of the cases that have resonated with him over the years.
Baxa said pro bono work helps preserve the integrity of the justice system and gives meaning to the phrase “equal justice under the law.” Without ensuring that poor people have access to lawyers, he said, the legal system would be nothing more than a concierge dispute resolution service for the wealthy.
“We did not sign up for that,” he said. “On an individual level, we are in a position to change or sometimes save people’s lives. Hard to beat that on the satisfaction index.”
Baxa also said it is difficult to single out any particular case that sticks out in his mind, but he mentioned the recent commutation of a death sentence for a pro bono client the firm’s attorneys had worked to save for more than 25 years.
