Special Counsel Larry Dougherty was quoted in a Tampa Bay Times article, “Chris Hoyer spent his law career, both public and private, going after bad guys,” about the death of former prosecutor and lawyer Chris Hoyer.
Dougherty, a former St. Petersburg Times reporter turned lawyer who once worked as an investigator for Hoyer’s firm, recalled a case Hoyer handled against MetLife, which was selling life insurance policies disguised as retirement policies to nurses. The case brought in $20 million in fines and $76 million in restitution to customers, as well as new regulations of the insurance industry.
“I don’t know a lot of lawyers who made such a successful transition from public service to private practice,” Dougherty said.
