Nicholas Johnson on the Future of Cannabis Products in Convenience Stores
Foley & Lardner LLP senior counsel Nicholas Johnson was quoted in the C-Store Dive article, “Do cannabis products still have a future in convenience stores?” analyzing new federal restrictions on hemp-derived THC products.
Johnson commented on the challenges facing large convenience store chains, noting, “When you’re a large, established business, you’ve got a host of institutional stakeholders you have to convince. You’re just much more likely to get a ‘no’ at some point along the way.”
Despite this disruption, he anticipates the industry will “move toward a model of reasonable regulation” rather than a ban. But with ongoing legal uncertainties and complex regulatory requirements, Johnson warns, “if you are generally risk-averse, this is probably not the best market for you.”
