Foley & Lardner LLP is pleased to announce the publication of a new book, “Big Data: A Business and Legal Guide,” the most comprehensive primer on the legal and business implications of big data.

Published by Taylor & Francis Group, the book aims to help business executives and lawyers understand big data and its implications on corporate decision-making. It also provides practical solutions related to the collection, licensing, handling and use of big data. More than a dozen Foley attorneys contributed to the book, which addresses the following topics:

  • Framework for analyzing big data issues and their impact on business decisions
  • Security and privacy aspects of big data, including protected health information
  • Analysis of risk management, electronic discovery and other litigation aspects of big data
  • Guidance on insuring for big data risk and the limits of big data in using competitive intelligence
  • Human resource implications of big data
  • Effective licensing approaches to be applied to big data

“Big data is fundamentally changing decision-making in boardrooms across the globe,” said James Kalyvas, partner at Foley and co-author of the book. “In the book, we introduce the concept of a ‘thoughtful pause’ between hearing what you can do with Big Data and deciding whether to do it.”

“We consider this book to be a necessary addition to the library of every executive, manager and counsel as it provides a framework for assessing the business, legal, and risk implications inherent in leveraging big data,” said Michael Overly, partner at Foley and co-author of the book. “We used subject matter experts in a wide variety of practice areas to illustrate the business and legal analytic approach required.”

In addition to the insights provided by the individual authors, the book gives recommendations on steps organizations can take to capitalize on the opportunities that big data affords without creating unforeseen risks and liability.
