Partner Carrie Hoffman was quoted in an article in the
San Antonio Current, “
How the Legislature’s Paid Sick Time Debate Has Blown Up Into a Battle on LGBTQ Rights,” about the prospects for passage of a state legislative proposal that would bar Texas cities from requiring private employers to offer paid sick leave to workers.
Hoffman said if the bill’s sponsor was hoping to pass paid sick leave legislation this session, he shouldn’t have deleted a provision saying it wouldn’t undo local rules prohibiting employers from discriminating against LGBTQ workers, which has gay rights advocates and some business groups up in arms. “It’s hard to see the LGBT community, even in a red state like Texas, letting that stand,” she said.
