Please join Foley for an exclusive executive briefing by special guest Kristiina Vuori, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Vice President for Scientific Affairs at Burnham Institute and Director of its NCI Cancer Center.
Dr. Vuori’s research is aimed at unraveling the cell mechanisms of the most life-threatening aspect of cancer — cancer metastasis. Metastasis is responsible for nearly all deaths in cancer patients, and understanding the mechanisms that turn a cancer from a locally growing tumor into highly metastatic cancer cells will provide clues for preventing this step in cancer progression.
Dr. Vuori earned her M.D. and Ph.D. at the University of Oulu, Finland, and received postdoctoral training at the Burnham Institute from 1992 to 1995, where she was appointed to the faculty in 1996. Dr. Vuori was selected as a PEW Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences in 1997. She has been Deputy Director of the San Diego Center for Chemical Genomics, housed at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, since its inception in 2005. She was appointed Deputy Director of the Institute’s NCI-designated Cancer Center in 2003, and Director of the Cancer Center in 2006.
Burnham’s Cancer Center is an interdisciplinary effort mobilizing more than 400 individuals working in a highly collaborative and interactive program, each sector of which addresses a particular aspect of cancer.
