Leading Transactional, Intellectual Property Attorney Etsuo Doi Brings Extensive Japan Practice Experience.
Foley announced today that Etsuo Doi has joined the firm as a partner in the New York and Tokyo offices dealing with intellectual property, litigation and transactions. He will also be co-managing partner of the firm’s Tokyo office.
Doi represents both Japan-based and international companies in matters relating to cross-border transactions, intellectual property counseling and litigation, e-commerce, joint ventures, licensing and general corporate work. He has extensive experience in Japan handling foreign inbound and outbound investments. He is admitted to practice in both Japan and New York. He is also qualified as a patent lawyer in Japan and has practiced law in Japan for over 13 years.
Previously, Doi served as corporate counsel at eBay, Inc. and chief legal counsel at eBay Japan KK. While at eBay, he tackled a broad range of new legal issues arising from innovative Internet business models. He is well versed in Japanese technology law and has spoken at numerous leading technology conferences. Prior to joining Foley, Doi was a partner at Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker LLP.

Doi’s arrival comes on the heels of Robert Huey joining the firm in the Washington D.C. office last month. Huey focuses his practice on international trade and transaction matters for multinational clients based in Europe, Asia and South America, which includes deep, longstanding relationships with major Japanese clients.
“Etsuo will be vital in handling outbound transactions involving U.S. law and inbound or domestic Japanese work on the corporate side,” added Michael Kaminski, co-managing partner of Foley’s Tokyo office. “His strong contacts in Japan, combined with Foley’s platform and the recent addition of Robert Huey, will strengthen our capabilities throughout the region.”

Doi is an adjunct professor of law at Temple University Law School (Japan campus) and has taught courses on the Comparative Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, Comparative Intellectual Property and East-West negotiation. Doi is listed in Best Lawyers® among a small number of Japanese lawyers.
