Griffin Appointed to National Collegiate Athletic Association's Infractions Committee
Foley is pleased to announce that Christopher L. Griffin, partner in the firm’s Tampa office, has been appointed to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Committee on Infractions, effective September 1, 2011.
Griffin was appointed to serve a three-year term as a member of the Committee. Prior to this appointment, he was a member of the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee for eight years, during five of which he served as committee chair.
In his role with the Committee on Infractions, Griffin will participate in hearings involving member schools and associated individuals who are alleged to have violated NCAA legislation. From those hearings, the Committee determines facts related to the alleged violations and, if necessary, imposes appropriate penalties on a member or individual found to be involved in a major violation. Additionally, Griffin and fellow Committee members will be responsible, when necessary, for revising established enforcement operating policies and procedures, including investigative guidelines.
Griffin will serve as one of the Committee on Infractions’ two Coordinators of Appeals. From that position he will be responsible for arguments on behalf of the Committee on Infractions to the Infractions Appeals committee when member schools or affected individuals appeal their cases after the Committee on Infractions issues its ruling.
Griffin was a four-year letterman in football at Florida State University, and also served as the Student Representative to the University’s Athletics Committee. Upon returning to Tampa to practice law, Griffin became active in local sports activities. In 1990-91 he served as President of the Tampa Chapter of the National Football Foundation. As a member of the Board of Directors of that organization, Mr. Griffin was instrumental in the community effort to bring the Outback Bowl to Tampa in the early 1990’s. He remained a member of the Outback Bowl Board of Directors, and served as Bowl Chairman in 1999-2000.
