
Ian T. Hampton
Senior Counsel
Ian Hampton is senior counsel in the Firm’s Antitrust & Competition practice group. He represents leading corporations and executives in high-stakes antitrust and commercial litigation, focusing on class actions, multidistrict proceedings, and regulatory investigations.
Ian has contributed to some of the most closely watched antitrust cases of the last decade, including In re RealPage Rental Software Antitrust Litigation, In re Treasury Securities Auction Antitrust Litigation, In re Credit Default Swaps Antitrust Litigation, In re Turkey Antitrust Litigation, In re Bail Bonds Antitrust Litigation, and Burnett v. National Association of Realtors, the landmark real estate commissions trial. He was part of the team that secured a motion to dismiss in the Turkey litigation and has led key aspects of dispositive motion practice, expert strategy, and class certification defense in complex litigation.
Ian also advises clients on a variety of antitrust risks, including those related to mergers, joint ventures, information sharing, and distribution agreements. He has successfully navigated multiple second requests and civil investigative demands before the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice, including two matters that resulted in full declinations of enforcement.
Recognized as a Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Commercial Litigation, Ian is also a BTI Client Service All-Star, a distinction awarded by corporate counsel to lawyers who consistently deliver superior client service. Active in the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, Ian has served on committees focused on civil litigation and long-range planning. He combines legal expertise with a client-focused approach to help clients manage risk and resolve complex disputes effectively.
Prior to joining Foley, Ian worked as an associate in the New York office of an international law firm. While in law school, he served as a judicial extern for Judge Marilyn Huff, of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

Antitrust and Competition
- Obtained dismissal of antitrust claims against a Fortune 500 company on the grounds that its participation in alleged price-fixing conspiracy was inherently implausible.
- Obtained dismissal of antitrust conspiracy and price discrimination claims against a major appliance manufacturer.
- Obtained summary judgment on monopolization counterclaims against a university and its patent licensee.
- Defended a leading financial services firm in antitrust class actions involving alleged price-fixing in markets for credit default swaps, U.S. Treasury securities, and municipal bonds.
- Defended a property management company in leading-edge antitrust litigation involving claims that the defendants’ use of rent-setting software amounts to “algorithmic” price-fixing.
- Secured the nationwide release of a leading real estate brokerage in multiple class actions, seeking billions of dollars in damages.
- Represented a surety company in antitrust litigation arising from the sale of bail bonds to consumers in California.
- Represent companies in investigations before the United States Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission.
Complex Commercial
- Obtained dismissal with prejudice of trade secret and breach of restrictive covenant claims against manufacturing client and one of its executives and defeated plaintiff’s motion to amend its complaint. Plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the remaining claims.
Insurance and Reinsurance
- Secured summary judgment dismissal of all claims against a multinational property insurer in a billion-plus dollar coverage litigation arising from Superstorm Sandy.
- Successfully defended ceding company in arbitration brought by its reinsurer.
