In the past 10 years, the field of sports drug testing has made great strides with advancements in the detection of designer anabolic steroids and testing for exogenous erythropoietin (EPO). Some athletes, eager to enhance their performance and gain a competitive edge, have turned to using a substance they hope is difficult to detect—human growth hormone (hGH).
One of the challenges facing sports today is effective testing for exogenous hGH. After extensive research, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) unveiled a blood test for hGH. Although the test has been used increasingly in the past three Olympiads, many hurdles must be overcome before this type of testing can be widely applied in the United States at the professional and collegiate level.
Join Major League Baseball and The Office of Continuing Medical Education David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, supported in part by funding from Foley & Lardner LLP, for the Growth Hormone Summit. This conference will identify the scientific, medical, legal, and ethical issues that must be addressed before hGH testing is considered a routine part of sports drug testing.
